A kit often has a smaller battery, or only one. Look at the Ah: that decides how long you can keep working.

Prices from the shops we compare. Nobody pays for a place. How we rank

How we calculate

You buy a cordless tool bare (without battery and charger) or in a kit with battery and charger. If you already have a battery of the same system, the bare tool is almost always the cheapest. If you are just starting, we compare two routes: a bare tool plus a separate battery with charger, or a kit straight away.

We take today's lowest price at the shops in our comparison. We recognise a bare tool by its product name, such as 'body', 'solo' or 'without battery', and by the model codes brands use for it: a Z at the end at Makita (DDF482Z), an N at DeWalt (DCD796N) and '-0' at Milwaukee (M18 FPD3-0X). A kit names its battery in Ah. Parts and small accessories filed among the tools do not count.

A kit often has a smaller battery, or only one. Two 5 Ah batteries are not the same as one of 2 Ah, so look at the Ah as well. If we find fewer than three bare tools with a price, we say nothing about the bare route.
