In short
ToolRango orders tools and prices by fixed rules that apply to everyone. Nobody can buy a higher place: brands and shops do not pay for their position in a list.
Every visitor sees the same order. We do not use personal data or pages you visited before to change it.
Categories, brands and battery platforms: ‘Popular’
This is the default order. There are five rules, in order of weight. A later rule only counts when the earlier ones make no difference:
- Tools with a price come first: a current shop price or a price the manufacturer publishes. Tools without a price come last.
- Among those, the most popular tools come first: what the most different visitors viewed over the past weeks. A click through to a shop counts twice as much as a visit, and recent days weigh more: each week counts half as much as the week after it. We count anonymously and without cookies (see the privacy statement), and visits by bots do not count.
- Among those, tools with a current shop offer come first: an offer from a shop that ToolRango shows.
- Among those, tools with a known battery platform come first.
- Among those, tools are listed alphabetically (A–Z) by product name.
Tools we know nothing about yet, such as new ones, therefore skip rule 2. Sales, payments and commission play no part in this order. Filtering by brand, battery platform or specification only changes which tools you see, not their order.
Choosing another order
With ‘Sort by’ you can choose a different order:
- ‘Price: low to high’ and ‘Price: high to low’: by the lowest current shop price of any of its versions (per version the top offer of its shop list that is not sold out); this is the price shown with the product in the list. Without a current shop offer, the lowest RRP of any of the versions counts instead, and the list then says so. Tools without an RRP come last; equal prices are listed A–Z.
- ‘Newest in the catalogue’: what was added to ToolRango most recently comes first. This says nothing about when a tool came onto the market.
- ‘Name (A–Z)’: alphabetically by product name.
Search
Your words are searched in the name, model number, brand, battery platform, category and versions, and are understood in other languages too (‘angle grinder’, ‘Winkelschleifer’ and ‘meuleuse’ all find angle grinders). A tool must match all your words. The default order (‘Relevance’), by weight:
- Tools whose name, model number or brand is exactly your search.
- Tools from a brand, platform or model you name.
- Tools in the category your word names.
- Other tools with all your words; the better the match, especially in the name, the higher.
- Tools that only resemble what you typed (after a typo).
At an equal place, tools with a photo, an RRP and a known battery platform come first, then A–Z. When your word finds nothing, we show the results for the closest word and say so.
Shop prices on a product page
For each version we only show shops that sell exactly that version, recognised by its EAN code or the manufacturer’s model number. A bare tool and a kit are separate versions. The order, again in order of weight:
- Shops that do not have the tool in stock come last.
- Shops that do not state their shipping costs come after shops whose total price we know.
- Among those, the lowest total price comes first: the price including VAT plus shipping.
- On an equal total price, the price we checked most recently comes first.
A price we have not been able to check for more than 48 hours is not shown. Every price says when we last checked it. The manufacturer’s RRP is shown separately and is never a shop offer.
Advertising and commission
There are no paid placements on ToolRango at the moment. If there are in future, every paid placement will be clearly marked ‘Advertisement’, with who paid for it when we know. An advertisement is kept apart from the normal order and never changes it.
ToolRango may receive a commission through links to shops when you buy something. That commission plays no part in the order: a shop that pays more is not listed higher.
Price drops and price history
When we say a price has dropped, we always compare it with the lowest price of the same shop in the 30 days before the new price began. If we do not know all of those 30 days, we do not report a price drop. A ‘was’ price stated by the shop itself, or the manufacturer’s RRP, is never used for this. The price history shows the lowest total price per day at the shops we track, as steps: the line only moves when a price really changes.
Trending now
The ‘Trending now’ row on the home page and in categories shows tools that clearly more different visitors viewed in the last 7 days than the 4 weeks before would lead us to expect. A tool needs at least 5 visitors a week to qualify, and the row only appears when at least 4 tools do. Payments and commission play no part here either.
